How to Play Contract Bridge
The 52-card deck & partnerships
Four players form two partnerships: South with North, and East with West. Using a standard 52-card deck, all cards are dealt so each player holds 13 cards. High card points (HCP) evaluate honors: Ace=4, King=3, Queen=2, Jack=1, with 40 points in the deck.
The Auction & Contract
Starting with the dealer, players place bids indicating the trick target (6 + bid level) and strain (♣ < ♦ < ♥ < ♠ < NT). A bid must exceed the prior bid. Players may also Pass, Double (X) an opponent’s bid, or Redouble (XX). Three consecutive passes seal the final contract.
Declarer & Dummy play
The player who first named the contract’s strain becomes Declarer. Declarer’s partner is the Dummy. After the opening lead by the defender on Declarer’s left, Dummy lays all 13 cards face up on the table. Declarer plays both their own hand and Dummy’s hand!
Trick-taking & Following suit
Play proceeds clockwise across 13 tricks. Players must follow the led suit if able; otherwise, they may discard or trump. The highest trump wins, or the highest card of the led suit if no trumps were played. The trick winner leads to the next trick.
Game, Slam & Overtrick points
Points are awarded for fulfilling contracts. Level 1–7 bids require 7 to 13 tricks. Major suits (♥, ♠) score 30 pts/trick; Minors (♣, ♦) score 20 pts/trick; No Trump scores 40 for the 1st trick and 30 for subsequent tricks. Contracts of 100+ trick points earn Game bonuses (300 non-vul, 500 vul).
4-Deal Chicago match format
Chicago Bridge consists of exactly four deals with rotating vulnerability (Deal 1: None, Deal 2: NS, Deal 3: EW, Deal 4: Both). This delivers authentic match tension in a fast 10-minute session.
How to evaluate your hand & bid
With 15–17 HCP and a balanced hand (no void or singleton), open 1NT. With 12–21 points and a 5-card major, open 1♥ or 1♠. A combined 25+ points between partners usually makes Game (3NT, 4♥, or 4♠).
A 12-trick contract (Level 6) is a Small Slam (+500/750 bonus), while winning all 13 tricks (Level 7) is a Grand Slam (+1000/1500 bonus). Bid slams only when holding 33+ combined team points.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the role of Dummy in Bridge?
Dummy’s cards are exposed face up on the table after the opening lead. Declarer makes all decisions and plays cards for both their own seat and Dummy.
What does 1NT mean in Bridge bidding?
An opening bid of 1NT shows 15 to 17 High Card Points with a balanced distribution (no singleton or void).
How is Contract Bridge different from Spades?
In Spades, every trick counts individually and Spades are always trump. In Bridge, players bid for trumps or No Trump, must reach 100 trick points for Game, and Declarer controls Dummy’s open hand.
How long is a 4-deal Chicago game?
A 4-deal Chicago game typically takes 8 to 12 minutes to play, providing full vulnerability rotation without the hours required for Rubber bridge.
